Bangladesh Declares Day of Mourning After Deadly Violence

Six Killed in Clashes Amidst Political Unrest

Leading Newspapers Call for Restraint

Bangladesh has declared a day of nationwide mourning on Tuesday, July 5, 2023, following the deaths of six people in clashes between security forces and protesters.

Leading Bangla newspapers such as Prothom Alo, Daily Ittefaq, Bangladesh Pratidin, Jugantor, Kaler Kantho, and Samakal have expressed deep concern over the violence and called for restraint from all sides.

The clashes erupted during a general strike called by opposition parties to protest the ongoing political crisis in the country. At least six people have been killed and dozens injured in the violence.

The government has deployed security forces to restore order, and police have fired tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse protesters.

The violence comes as Bangladesh grapples with a political crisis that has seen the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the flight of several senior government officials from the country.
